The JD program at Columbia is a five-year program in which you will (assuming you do the five years) take lots of nice courses with undergraduates (since they are graded, these will be relatively easy for you, the law school being two years long, you will be at a academic disadvantage to undergraduates for the hard courses taken by lawyers) and will be able to prep slightly differently (leaning in the analytical direction instead of the construction of full argument) to focus on either trial work or writing appeals.

The culture of the law school itself is very competitive and highly academic; professors are generally excellent educators who are also heavy litigators or appellate advocates. As a student, you will probably kill it in moots, the QBs will talk about you, etc.

That said, I would probably not recommend Columbia as your undergrad (unless you are already there; law school is a good fallback since you’ll still be learning the material, the curriculum is fairly similar whether you’re an undergrad or a grad, and since you’re in an Ivy, the pay is good).

Columbia the undergrad school is not a social environment conducive to success; the student body (on the undergraduate campus) to a high degree values social capital over academic; parties and club politics are highly valued over class attendance, homework, etc. And while that may be desirable in some ways and allow people to more openly identify as minority and marginalize more traditionally assimilatedized populations, it isn’t conducive to learning (which involves focus, dedication, hard work, and the ability to block out the distractions in your environment).

I would suggest considering another Ivy as an undergrad (if you get in) and then coming back for law.
